Ode to the Oceans

Today is World Oceans Day. It's the one day each year when we pay a little more attention to the health of the waters surrounding us and speak a little louder about the need to improve our habits.
Personally, I'd go with World Oceans Week (sharks already get a whole week anyway) but so far it hasn't been extended beyond one day a year.

The idea for World Oceans Day was proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro by Canada, my own motherland, which sits between three oceans.

According to the Government of Canada, the United Nations officially recognized June 8th as World Oceans Day as of 2009. So now, people take the opportunity to raise awareness about the World's oceans by marking this day every year.

This year, the theme is "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet," and there has been an abundance of social media campaigning for the promotion of healthy habits, including the #BetterBagChallenge which aims to keep plastic trash out of the water.

According to WorldOceansDay.org, plastic bags and other disposable plastic items are among the greatest threats to sea turtles and sea birds around the world. I don't know about you, but I think sea turtles are adorable and I find it terribly sad to see them tangled in a needless plastic mess.

For the past several years, World Oceans Day has been led by The Ocean Project, a U.S.-based organization with a mission to advance"ocean conservation in partnership with zoos, aquariums, and museums around the world" which, I'm totally down with.We owe our lives to the Oceans so the very least we can do is add a few more supportive voices to the mix and remind the people around us that plastic bags are endangering our aquatic lifeline.

Adriatic Sea
And, if the turtles and birds aren't enough to convince people, just remind them that oceans have become our playgrounds. They entertain us and relax us, and it would be pretty awful if we had to dodge man made plastics every time we took a dip.
South China Sea
So share the wisdom and the love, buy yourself a cute cotton shopping bag and dump the plastic - be careful how you dump it though!  Happy World Oceans Day!
